SAABtec is located in Padfield, a former mill village less than half a mile away from Hadfield town centre, recently made famous by the TV series League of Gentlemen which is filmed there. Hadfield has a direct rail service to Manchester Piccadilly which takes 30 minutes. There are plenty of facilities in the town, and SAABtec can recommend The Village Cafe for fish and chips, and good home made pies, Hadfield Bakery for pies, and Royston Cafe for all day breakfasts. We are perfectly located for those wishing to go for a walk or cycle ride in the Peak District, and we would be happy to lend a bicycle. The Longendale trail is an excellent choice for an easy bike ride or walk, being quite flat and well surfaced, it takes you through the valley past several reservoirs, including Torside which is home to Glossop Sailing Club. The trail is on the site of the railway which ran from Manchester to Sheffield via the Woodhead tunnel. There is no access to the tunnel at Woodhead so to continue to Sheffield you need to leave the trail and use the road. Any other route you choose from Padfield is guaranteed to take you up and down substantial hills for those who prefer a challenge. Another interesting site to visit is the summit of the Snake Pass, which is the A57 from Glossop towards Sheffield across the pennines. Built by Telford in 1820, it is a spectacular road with its summit 512 metres (1679 feet) above sea level. From here you can access the Pennine Way and Doctors Gate path, and also there are many wrecked aircraft to be found which crashed here during the war. If you get a lift or leave your SAAB you can follow the Doctors Gate path all the way down into Glossop. If you have time to travel further afield, Manchester is 30 minutes on the train - visit the many fine shops, have lunch in Castlefield, and visit the museum of Science and Industry. Within 60 minutes you could drive to Castleton and visit the world famous Blue John mines, Bakewell - home of the Bakewell pudding and many interesting shops, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, or sample the spa water of Buxton. |
